This one is in the Locrian mode, one of my favorite tonalities to explore. I had a theory teacher in college who said that Locrian was the least useful and least musical of the modes. Of course, he and most jazz and classical players were coming from a place where you never want anything to be that dark. So they never practice Locrian. I only truly learned how to make Locrian sound good after many, many hours spread over several years.

So why would anyone want to play anything as dark as the Locrian mode for 4 minutes? I think the title for this one gives all the context you need. Throughout history there has never been a shortage of reasons to suspect our future will be in tatters, though usually it never ends up quite as bad as we think. However, there is still the lingering fear that one day the earth’s calamities will catch up to our worst nightmares…
