about

This improvisation is here to be just that: a respite from intense screaming guitars. I like when a short atmospheric clean or acoustic track is inserted to break up the heavy tunes on an album. I really enjoy that approach, especially on Lamb of God’s Resolution or albums by Arch Enemy. I did the same thing with Believe in Nothing by my jazz-metal band Blue Prototype (blueprototype.bandcamp.com).

This is also played on my Epiphone tuned down to C, which I started doing because of Arch Enemy, Dream Theater, and Black Label Society, as well as 7-string jazz players like Jimmy Bruno. Sometimes you just want to hear the extra weight that downtuning can bring. This and “Doomsday Reverie” are the only tracks for which I had a form in mind before I started improvising. This one is actually a minor version of the chords from “Joy Spring” by the legendary trumpeter Clifford Brown.
