about

Stacking logs on the fire,
Failing to realize
We are all standing on the pyre.

When I’m gone,
having left this time and space,
Scatter my ashes-
Don’t let me be interred in this forsaken place!

Sometimes I just want to give up on trying to find the answers to the world’s problems. I want to disengage from the gears of society, turn in my membership card to this club called humanity, and eject myself from this sinking ship called Earth. The world is eating itself alive and I no longer want any part in it. And for six minutes and fifty-three seconds I am not. For a six minutes and fifty-three seconds I can find peace.

While the concept of this album was strongly influenced by Arabic oud music, this is the only piece that overtly expresses that influence. It’s foundation is a harmonic minor scale with a #4 (1 2 b3 #4 5 b6 7). I got the idea from a few different places- I heard John Abercrombie use a #4 over the i-minor chord in a solo on “My Funny Valentine”, Jeff Loomis also used three half steps in a row in his solo on Arch Enemy’s “Dreams of Retribution”. Much later I found out it is called “nawa athal” in Arabic maqam teachings.
