about

This one is strongly influenced by Bach. Despite studying classical music in college (I had to take two years of classical guitar and voice lessons as well as many other classically focused classes), it doesn’t always resonate with me emotionally. But Bach…Bach I understand. Bach resonates with me. And what I love most about Bach is the counterpoint.

As a result, I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to employ contrapuntal ideas in an improvisational setting. Some of it comes from simply implying counterpoint with large intervals, something you hear a lot in Bach’s single line solo violin pieces, and some of it comes from using hybrid picking to grab two notes simultaneously. I have really only scratched the surface of what’s possible here, uncovering only one tiny moving piece to an entire mechanism of creativity.
